Captain Thomas on sailing with Bridgescout®: “A smart solution that just works.”
For Captain Thomas, navigating Germany's inland waterways is a daily occurrence. And although he knows the routes like the back of his hand by now, the work remains challenging. Especially under bridges where there's little room to spare. For some time now, Thomas has been sailing with Bridgescout® on board the Rhenus Dortmund. “In some sections, you literally only have a few centimeters of leeway,” he says. “Then you want to be absolutely sure you act in time.”
What particularly appeals to him? The simplicity. “The system does what it's supposed to do. It's clear, straightforward, and reacts immediately. That's just nice, especially in poor visibility or when there's a distraction on board. It helps us react on time and prevent mistakes,” Thomas explains. “Especially in dark stretches or with varying water levels, it's good to have an extra pair of eyes that are always paying attention.”
Bridgescout® clearly shows how high the wheelhouse is in relation to the bridge, with visual and spoken warnings. “That gives confidence. You don't have to guess or doubt: you can just see it.”
User-friendly on board
What Thomas appreciates about the system is the ease of use. “It works intuitively,” he says. “New crew members understand it within minutes. Red means pay attention, green means safe. It doesn't get any simpler.”
The panel also displays practical information, such as speed, time to the bridge, and the name of the bridge.
Inland shipping is getting busier and busier, notes Thomas. With Bridgescout® on board, he feels better prepared. “You have that little bit of extra control. Especially on stretches where you normally have to rely heavily on your judgment. That reduces stress and prevents mistakes.”
He now uses the system daily. “Once you get used to it, you won't want to be without it.”
