Firstly, passengers often notice a collision immediately. The ship stops immediately and/or (loud) noises are heard. If the bridge is completely destroyed by the collision, the ship must be towed to a shipyard for inspection. The (external) emergency services organize a rescue operation for those on board. Everyone is evacuated.

Since the ship cannot quickly resume its course, the current cruise must be canceled. However, future cruises also threaten to be canceled. Damage to the ship and canceled cruises due to collisions lead to (extremely) high costs. Insurance claims and procedures are time-consuming, and the damage also affects the insurance premium. In addition to the practical problems in the event of a collision, the passengers are also at risk, both physically and mentally.

United Rivers places a high priority on safety. Safety for people on board; passengers and crew. But it is also important for United Rivers to prevent damage to the captain's confidence in their knowledge and skills. Up to now, United Rivers has not used bridge height detection systems on board its fleet. Captains see an approaching object with the naked eye or via a radar/navigation system. To assess whether there is sufficient clearance for the ship to pass safely, they use preparation, knowledge, skills, and their best judgment. This is possible, but the greater the distance to the bridge, the more difficult it becomes to make a good assessment. This poses unnecessary risks, especially when visibility is limited, for example at night or in precipitation. Moreover, there is always the risk of distraction and routine, which could lead to an approaching object not being seen (in time).

“I was substituting for a captain on the Danube and wasn't aware that the lower part of the wheelhouse was still raised. Bridgescout® generated an alarm as I approached a bridge. So I checked the position of the wheelhouse and indeed concluded that the wheelhouse was too high.”

To reduce the risk of collisions within its fleet, United Rivers was looking for an easy-to-interpret bridge height detection system. Bridgescout® notifications are clear and concise. The panel in the wheelhouse lights up at a distance of 500 meters (blue screen). Here, the Bridgescout® system already warns the captain for the first time about an approaching object. Alertness is an important part of preventing collisions. If there is insufficient clearance to safely pass an object, a warning appears on the panel in the wheelhouse (red screen) and an (audible) alarm sounds. The system also had to be adaptable to United Rivers' requirements. The margin between the wheelhouse (Bridgescout® sensor) and the object can be adjusted as desired, and the frequency of the (acoustic) alarm can be changed. Finally, United Rivers wanted an (acoustic) alarm near the wing control panels, so that captains are also warned on deck; Bridgescout® River Cruise.

“The Bridgescout® alarm is very useful when navigating the Main. Especially when a low bridge is located in the middle of a lock. Sometimes, when entering a lock, you cannot pay enough attention to the wheelhouse. Bridgescout® helps you maintain the correct wheelhouse level.”

The collaboration has now been sealed with the implementation of Bridgescout® onboard all Avalon WATERWAYS® cruise ships.
